Henrietta
Role: First wife of The Ertian Surgeon. Never appears in person; dead by the events of Ch. 05 — A Dictionary. Affiliation: None stated. An Aerth resident who “hated longsleep and vowed never to travel beyond Aerth.” Era: Lived on late-empire Aerth; died roughly two centuries before the story’s closing scene.
Summary
The wife The Ertian Surgeon left when he took the post on Orb Ertia to escape a stale marriage. “I had left on an argument. There was no chance to apologise now.” While he was in longsleep she remarried, refused gerontological drugs, and died. When he topolog’s back to Aerth in old age and Eda pulls up her public record, there are seventeen women by her name in the directory and she is “easy to find.” He reads for a long time and says: “She remarried. She didn’t take the gerontology drugs. She died two centuries ago.”
She exists in the chapter as the shape of his regret — the one relationship the technologies of the empire (longsleep, topologs) could compress distance for but could not compress time for. The story’s meditation on meaning-arriving-too-late is partly about her.
