Delphium

Kind: “Strange matter used for powering starships.” Discovered/invented: Unstated. Already the standard empire starship power source by late-empire. Based on: Unknown exotic-matter chemistry.

Summary

A named but unexplained exotic matter — the empire’s bulk starship power feedstock. The story introduces delphium only as the economic reason Orb Dannika’s strike had leverage: Dannika holds “the largest deposits of delphium… that strange matter used for powering starships,” and when the miners and archaeologists stopped work together, the empire had to fold to break the strike. Because delphium extraction is a strategic bottleneck, the miners’ union can force the empire’s hand.

This is the first-mention of a bulk starship fuel in the wiki. It sits downstream of the Hare Method-era particle physics lineage and is unrelated (as far as the story says) to the Fidon or the Ribbondash drive mechanism.

Effects / capabilities

  • Powers empire starships — hollowships, voidships, presumably Ribbondash-class vessels.

Limitations / dangers

  • Resource-concentrated on Orb Dannika, so politically leveraged.

Appearances

Open questions

  • What kind of matter is it — stable strange-matter, degenerate, something from Melnitron-era particle physics?
  • Is delphium extracted only on Dannika, or just most of it?
  • Does it predate the Galactic Human Empire, or is it a post-Hare Method discovery?
